UPDATED:
Here I sit with my two device solution (M1 Max MBP 14 32gb/1tb and M1 iPP 11 1tb in etended display mode) bemoaning why can't I have a single device solution. This last weekend's perusal of Best Buy specials left me even more frutrated.
1. Surface Pro 11 just won't work with my (HP LaserJet MFP 428) or my Canon ImageFormula R40 scanner - no longer true - the HP can be made to work with WOA per a trusted local IT expert AND he's sure there are ScanSnap models that do work with the SP11 (1600?)
2. M4 iPad Pro, while beautiful piece of kit, is still only an iPad
3. Samsung Book4 Pro 360 2-in-1 offers pen support, but at 16" is just too large AND uses the plagued Meteor Lake
4. LG Gram 17 is an excellent 17" ultralite (2.98#) with 32gb/2tb for $1199 but no touch no pen
5. Lenovo YogaBook 9i - two AMOLED screens with external keyboard, touch, and pen...Surface Neo's big brother?
Everything is a compromise, and none have the power of my three year old MBP 14, nor any better pen experience than the equally old M1 ipad Pro. All are captives of Copilot and M$ data mining...so I need to just use my own two screen computer (thank you Apple for SIdecar) and get used to my two device life.
Wanted everyone to be sure they saw my uodate above (hardwware accessories may be slowly evolving for SP11 and WOA), as well as my comment to Bronsky above - I may just have to live multiple lives and separate environments between work and personal uses. In fact, that "personal" side could become iPad Pro only since I really wouldn't need the MBP 14 if I go Windows for my law practice.
Yeah I decided to get over the fact that windows kind of sucks and that my iPad was always going to have iPad issues (not a real OS mainly), and switch a week or so ago to using my Surface Pro 9 instead of my iPad, and instead of using my Acer 16" gaming laptop for just gaming, I now use it as my main computer. So when I travel, I leave the laptop behind and have a 2 device life. Everything on the SP9 and my trusty iPhone 15 Plus. When I am home, I lug the large laptop and my SP9 both, but it is literally between desks LOL. So far, so good. The only Apple devices left in my current life (not including kids) is my Apple Watch 6 and my iPhone.
I am perfectly happy with my 2 device life. The Fold has been a revelation. Unfolded, it is just large enough to read most correspondence, emails and smaller documents, like certifications. I find that this takes up the vast majority of my time when I am out of the office. Samsung's soltware makes marking up a draft email easy peesey. OneNote does the rest. Downloaded technical documents can normally be read with Xodo, pinching and zooming where necessary. It's really only the larger documents and LEXIS research that requires the larger display of the Pro X. Battery life is surprisingly good. Although i charge it on the bedstand at night, I could go two days without needing to do so. I rarely end the day with less than 50% charge. I was finally able to figure out Outlook for Android and get my calendar working through Outlook.com. That's a great addition. Probably my one pet peeve is the lack of a digitizer on the front screen.
For the limited work it does, the Pro X is perfect. I have a central network printing/scanning hub (Kyocera 3554ci) in my office (probably one of my largest expenses next to insurance) that has its own drivers working just fine with WOA. But, even my Epson Ecotank 3760 works fine with WOA, probably because it is set up as a network printer using the Windows generic driver. However, the fold has taken over so much of what I previously did on the Pro X that I don't even take my briefcase along on personal travel anymore unless there is a specific reason to do so (like a brief being due upon my return). Even at that, I have prepared some smaller court filings with the Fold/BT Keyboard combo (Still have my old Slate 500 KB) and was able to electronically file them without any problem. The Fold is plenty powerful and fast for that kind of simple task.
Not to nit pick, but what you're describing is a three device solution.😉 Mac Book, IPad and IPhone.
Interesting that you put this in hardware, when so much of your situation is due to software. You're firmly iPhone for family communication needs. You can't go back to surface due to drivers.
Then again - is there a one device solution for you when you're currently using both machines simultaneously?
That's where I always get stuck with the hardware - screen real estate. There's no such thing as one device that fits in my pocket (or small sling bang) that also has enough screen space to do things. I know kids these days get an awful lot done on a smartphone screen, but even the fold isn't big enough for most "real" work. The glasses are probably the closest I've gotten to the one device (plus peripherals that fit in a small bag) solution.
I also share your frustration with the uninspiring consumer tech landscape. I need a new toner cartridge and I'm not even motivated to go to Bestbuy to browse around while I pick one up.
Yeah, I wish that there was a smaller alternative to the Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Pro 360 --- a 12" tablet with similar hardware would be perfect... (mournful dirge for my Book 12)
